Destructuring in JavaScript

Destructuring is one of the most useful and commonly used features in modern JavaScript. If you learning React, APIs or modern JavaScript then destructuring is something you will see everywhere. At first, the syntax may look confusing but the actual concept is very simple.

Destructuring means extracting values easily from arrays or objects.

What destructuring means

Destructuring is a JavaScript feature that allows us to extract values from arrays or objects and store them into variables easily. Instead of accessing values repeatedly, destructuring gives a cleaner and shorter syntax.

Why Destructuring is needed

Before destructuring, developers had to write repetitive code. Developers violated DRY principle . With objects the code works fine but when objects become large, code becomes repetitive. Let's understand by an example before and after destructuring , what does it solve.

Before Destructuring

const user = {
  name: "Rahul",
  age: 21
};

const name = user.name;
const age = user.age;

After Destructuring

const user = {
  name: "Rahul",
  age: 21
};

const { name, age } = user;

See here the code is cleaner, less repetitive code, easier readability and faster data extraction.

Destructuring arrays

Now let's first understand array destructuring.

Normal Array

const arr = [10, 20, 30];

const first = arr[0];
const second = arr[1];

console.log(first);  // output : 10
console.log(second); // output : 20

Array Destructuring

const arr = [10, 20, 30];

const [first, second] = arr;

console.log(first); // output : 10
console.log(second); //output : 20

Let's understand the above code, JavaScript assign values based on position. If you third instead second the output should have 30 in the console.

Destructuring objects

Object destructuring is even more commonly used in modern JavaScript. Let's understand by an example with object destructing and without object destructuring.

Without Object Destructuring

const student = {
  name: "Rahul",
  course: "B.Tech"
};

const name = student.name;
const course = student.course;

Like above it also violate the DRY principle.

Object Destructuring

const student = {
  name: "Rahul",
  course: "B.Tech"
};

const { name, course } = student;

console.log(name);// Rahul
console.log(course); // B.Tech

Difference between Array and Object Destructuring

Default values

Default values in destructuring process sometimes properties may not exist. Default values help avoid undefined. You are understand after seeing this example :

const user = {
  name: "Rahul"
};

const { name, city = "Delhi" } = user;

console.log(city); // Delhi

Here, city = "Delhi " Because city properties does not exist inside object. So default values was used. Likewise a function ask for two argument and there also you can set a default values if user does not provide instead of undefined it should fallback to default values. Default values helps in prevent undefined errors, provide fallback values and make code safer.

Benefits of destructuring

Destructuring is heavily used in modern JavaScript because it improves code quality and it feel easy to avoid to write repetitive code again and again.

1. Less Repetitive Code

2. Cleaner Syntax

3. Better Readability

4. Easier Function Parameters

5. Commonly used in Modern JavaScript
